Jigsaw U 104

Jigsaw U 104:

In this lesson, I demonstrate all 4 panes being used.

The map shows students where I am located. However, in my recording the map did not show up. The notes page did. I provided this screen shot so that you can see what I am talking about when I reference the map!

The whiteboard shows can image that I keep posted when the whiteboard is not in use. It serves as a reminder for students.

The webcam, video and audio feature are all used. This was a really easy and engaging way to demonstrate proper hand washing techniques. And the students get to see me wash my hands! Ha!

The presentation pane is a way for me to show a presentation. It's great for going over specific instructions.

Here is the link to my recorded session!

This was a really fun lesson to create. All the components were easy to add to the panes. I feel that the web cam really provided a way to interact with the students when they are all over the state! Having the ability to upload videos directly to the pane makes for easy one click viewing. No sharing your screen needed!

Overall, Jigsaw is fun to use! I am glad that we were able to explore all panes to maximize their use in our classrooms.

Jigsaw U 103

Pane 3: Use of Survey

In this survey, I polled students on whether or not they would consume products that were made from Genetically Modified Foods (GMO). The students were assigned a GMO research assignment. They were to state arguments for and against GMOs. As a part of the assignment they were to poll friends and family on the topic of GMOs. But, I didn't know what their personal choice was. This survey was a quick and easy way to find out! And the survey or poll like this was very easy to create. The students would be instantly engaged in the lesson when they opened up the JigSaw classroom.

Pane 4: Use of the Whiteboard

For the whiteboard, I choose to upload a key term review. In the class, we would review each definition and come up with the correct term. I chose to use the text box feature to type in the correct terms. My computer does have a touch screen so I could have written directly on the screen, but the text box was much neater. For a matching review or cross word puzzle it would be easier to use the pencil feature or a stylus.

Reflection:

The survey feature was a really great way to engage students from the start. A quick poll is a fun way to see what they think! The white board is a cool feature that makes you feel like you are really in a real classroom writing on the board! The pencil feature was a little hard to use at first and the terms I was writing were very messy. The text box provided much clearer answers that were easy to read. In my class, Food, Nutrition, and Wellness, I will mostly use the white board for key term reviews - matching and crossword puzzles. Fill in the blank type of activities.

Pane 1: Video and Audio for Instructional Purposes
Food, Nutrition, and Wellness B

An Introductory Video will be shown on proper hand washing techniques. The video in pane 1 is from the USDA. I downloaded it as an mp4 file. It's really cool how you can have a little video library at your fingertips. All you have to do is add them to your asset library and session. This video was great because it discusses how and when to properly wash your hands - like after handling raw meat.

I created a power point presentation on the Safety and Sanitation Unit Assignments. One of the assignments that the students are to complete is a poster on Proper Hand Washing. When going of the presentation, I like to maximize the presentation so that it takes up the whole screen. It's easier to see! Also, using a larger font helps!

To end the lesson, I will play the mp3 file of 'Happy Birthday'. A tip for proper hand washing is to sing the Happy Birthday song to yourself. Once you are finished signing - you have washed your hands long enough! This was fun!

The components of this lesson were really fun. The video showed the importance of proper hand washing and when you should always wash your hands - like after handling raw meat. Then, in the presentation, I went over the assignments that were coming up. A proper hand washing technique assignment is included so the video was relevant. At the end, I played Happy Birthday and we all pretended to wash our hands for that length of time.

I have uploaded 5 assets to my asset library that have been tagged "Safety and Sanitation". These 5 assets will help to create a meaning session for my class.

Here is a screen shot of the 5 assets with the "Safety and Sanitation" tag. I like the idea of tagging all the assets that go to each module. You will then have a complete Unit lesson plan all in one place!

I have also created a tag for my A and B session of my course. Here is the screen shot of my assets tagged for Food, Nutrition, and Wellness B. This is a great idea because when teaching the A part of the class one semester and the B part another semester the assets will not get all jumbled up together. Especially when all the asset names relate to each other - it's hard to remember what asset goes to which class!

Here is a screen shot of all my assets without applying the tags. It's a little confusing! They are all mixed up together. Before I knew how easy tagging was I would name my asset files with little clues - like (B) - so I would know that they will be taught in the B section of the course. Now I just tag!

It's funny - now that we have switched from Adobe to Jigsaw - I don't even remember how to use Adobe!

Self-Reflection on Teaching Abilities

Completing TOOL has taught me many things about teaching in an online classroom. I have completed many professional development courses and have had many teacher training exercises in the area of technology. However, I have gotten the most out of TOOL! Going through each step on my own and creating teaching tools using various web resources has really been interesting. I feel that I am now ready to venture in to the online classroom!

Differentiation

When reviewing student data is it important to take in to consideration all students, the type of assessment, and the overall achievement of the class.
Let's just say the class has had 3 assignments:
  1.  Weekly Meal Plan
  2. The Importance of Maintaining a Healthy Weight Essay
  3. GoAnimate created Cooking Video

On assignment #1 90% of the students achieved an 80 of above.
On assignment #2 40% of the students achieved an 80 or above.
On assignment #3 50% of the students achieved an 80 or above and some did not even attempt the assignment.

When examining this data I can see that the majority of students enjoyed and completed an assignment that was most like a "real world" scenario. They were able to create a meal plan based on what they may already be doing in daily life. The essay assignment was done well by some but others struggled. The third assignment was not as great as I had hoped. Perhaps, students were unable to complete this assignment because of technology issues or lack of computer knowledge.

Another option for students would be to offer a number of different assignments on the same subject matter and let the students chose which assignment they would like to complete. This would cater to may different learning styles. I would always offer students more assignments similar to assignment #1. They all seemed to enjoy the assignment and the majority of the class was successful!

Rubrics and Competencies

The competency structure that I have chosen to set up is based on the GPS that Students will apply the Dietary Guidelines throughout the lifespan as they relate to modern life.

Students will create a weekly meal plan following the guidelines set out in My Plate. The meal plan should include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for 7 days. Students should choose whole grains, a variety of fruits and vegetables, dairy products, proteins, and very few fats and sweets.

I would create a rubric to assess student achievement of this competency. The rubric would include daily recommended amounts of each food group and if the weekly meal plan met these guidelines.
