1. What role or purpose do discussion forums serve in the online classroom and are they effective?

In the online classroom, discussion forums serve as a way to effectively engage students in an online collaborative discussion. Discussion forums build connections and class community by promoting discussions.

2. How do discussion forums function as a teaching tool?

Discussion forums serve as a teaching tool by allowing students to develop critical thinking and writing skills and allow students to express themselves.  It also will facilitate exploratory learning. Students can review and respond to others and think about the way that they approach learning. Discussion forums also allow students time to reflect on the course matter before they respond. Students can prepare a thoughtful response to the discussion.

3. How could they be used effectively and ineffectively? Furthermore, what are some best practices for facilitating forums online?

Effect use of a discussion forum is key to its success. This is done by the instructor facilitating questions and responding to answers. Also, the instructor is to keep the discussion on task. Much like in a traditional classroom the instructor is to lead the lecture and keep the students focused on the topic.

Best practices for facilitating an online discussion forum:
  • Establish and communicate discussion forum ground rules
  • Determine and communicate how you will evaluate students participation
  • Encourage your students by asking good questions to keep the discussion going
  • Encouraging informal interaction between students  - have everyone introduce themselves
