Joining A Digital Learning Community Quest
My Top 5 Digital Learning Communities:
- Peer 2 Peer University https://p2pu.org/en/ - An open learning community where users organize and participate in groups to learn about specific topics.
- Wikiversity http://en.wikiversity.org/ - Free learning materials that you are able to create and use.
- Khan Academy https://www.khanacademy.org/
Free, educational mini lectures. Practice work and tools for educators are available. - Harvard Open Courses: Open Learning Initiative http://www.extension.harvard.edu/open-learning-initiative - Noncredit, free online lectures taught buy Harvard professors.
- OpenStudy http://openstudy.com/ - OpenStudy is an excellent source for students to connect with each other when studying the same subjects. Students are able to ask questions and give and receive answers.
The Digital Leaning Community that I have decided to join is OpenStudy. I found this DLC most intriguing because it is an excellent resource for students to collaborate with others on subject and topics that they are all studying. Since virtual learning is not done in a traditional classroom students do not have the opportunity to "ask a neighbor". OpenStudy.com allows students to study, learn together, ask questions and give answers.
OpenStudy DLC is easy to navigate. A student in search of help would simply select the subject matter then type the question. There is a chat option where students can discuss topics as a group. Many of the features on OpenStudy were similar to those you would find on social networking sites - making it more appealing to students. As a digital educator, I would make sure that my students were aware of DLCs and how easy it is to join. These are excellent resources!
