Digital Resources and Netiquette
It is always important to treat others with respect and kindness. Even though you are not face to face with people you encounter on the Internet through digital communities this rule still applies. Netiquette is the term used for online etiquette. As a digital citizen it is important to become familiar with these rules. Using proper netiquette demonstrates that you are a good digital citizen.
The Dos and Don'ts of Netiquette
Do
1. Remember the Golden Rule - do unto others as you would have them do unto you
2. Remember that those you are communicating with are real people with feelings.
3. Have the same standards and behavior that you would in real life.
4. Use correct grammar and spelling.
5. Be respectful of others time and bandwidth. Don't send numerous unnecessary emails with multiple attachments, graphics, etc. Some users many not be able to download these things in a timely manner.
6. If you are an expert in a subject area - share your knowledge.
7. No flaming. Flaming is expressing what you feel in a tactless way with no regard to others feelings.
8. Respect privacy.
9. Don't use a digital space to abuse power.
10. People make mistakes - be able to get past this.
Don'ts
1. Don't use ALL CAPS when typing.
2. Don't break the law.
3. Don't use offensive language.
4. Don't spam.
5. Don't be confrontational.
6. Don't do or say anything online that you would not do face to face. What goes on the Internet - stays on the Internet!
